America: Hola, my name is America Barcelo Feldman and I am a Spanish professor and journalist. I have a Bachelors Degree in Communications earned at UNAM (Mexico) and a Masters Degree in Spanish Arts and Culture earned at CCSUSM. I have been teaching Spanish language and culture in middle, high schools, and universities in my hometown of Mexico City as well in United States since 1999. In my free time, I love to travel and visit historic sites in the world. I am passionate about history and culture; it is the reason in my classes my students always travel virtually to explore the Hispanic World and learn about our roots and culture. I am passionate to share with everyone my love for culture, traditions, and customs. I strongly believe students can benefit to learn different languages experiencing the roots of the countries. Another one of my big hobbies is watching movies and attending cultural events. It is the reason my academic research has always focused on cinematography and culture. Hispanic countries are rich in culture traditions and customs, as well legends and myths. Every season of the year has a strong meaning and value. Come this winter to learn about holiday traditions and culture in the Hispanic World.

Carla: Hola!! My name is Carla. I’m from Argentina and I was lucky to be able to travel and live in many different countries of America and Asia (Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico and Thailand), as well as 6 years in the US to improve my English. All these adventures allowed me to experience and learn the diversity and richness of the Spanish language and culture beyond the borders of my own country. Currently, I am living in Montevideo, Uruguay where I work as a Teacher.

I am a teacher who incorporates developmental psychology to keep students engaged, and I believe that play is an important part of learning. I am a professional and dynamic teacher, flexible and patient. I am very much looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for the Spanish language with you. Let’s do it!

While the most beloved Mexican Christmas traditions are firmly based on the birth of Christ, the timing of the celebration coincides with Mexico’s ancient worship of the sun. During the nine darkest days of winter, the Aztecs celebrated the God of the Sun, pleading for his return and praising both the Sun and his virgin mother goddess.
Argentina is a large South American country with a terrain that includes the Andes mountains, glacial lakes and grasslands in the Pampas, the traditional grazing land of its famous cattle. We will tour the different regions together, get to know their climates and geography.
Argentina is one of the Latin American countries with more variety in the musical aspect. It is possible, therefore, to find a great repertoire of genres according to the cultural diversity that characterizes it. We will explore music and dance. We’ll learn about tango, folklore, national rock and cumbia. Be ready to dance and have fun!!

French Culture

Yasmine Martinet

Pick one day each week for a new lesson:

Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11am PST

I am Yasmine, I am 27 and I currently live in Salvador, Brazil. My father is French, my mother is Brazilian, and my husband is American. I studied German for my Bachelors and then English for my Masters, so I am fluent in four languages. I have lived over twenty years in Paris, then two years in Berlin, Germany, then six months in Oakland, California. I came around to teaching after three years of travelling, because I felt a strong need to share my love of languages and of foreign cultures. I am looking forward to sharing that with you!

Language is huge in adapting to and feeling comfortable in a foreign country. Even if some behaviors are strange, even if it’s a little scary at first, knowing the language allows you to ask questions, communicate with people, find your bearings: it is the perfect way into a place. I am very excited for you to get there! I am very professional teacher, with a lot of patience and humor. I’m all for having fun lessons and have the student’s curiosity and projects lead the class. Maintaining a positive attitude and creating positive language experiences is very important to me, and I will always do my best on that.

French can be a lot of fun! It can be anything we’d like. So, let’s get started!

Explore The Lessons...

Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world. It’s been enchanting the eyes and minds of people for centuries. With its honeycomb like streets, it’s density of cafes, bookstores, fashion stores and museums, it is an epicenter of culture and a true metropolis. We’ll deep dive into the heart of the city in our first week!
France is the home country of many artists but has also been a refuge for artists from all over the world for decades. We will discover history, geography and art as we take a tour of beautiful regions where artists were most inspired and creative. Who wants to be inspired with me? Get ready to marvel!
France has many MANY specialties, and we will talk about some of them. What I am most excited about is cooking with you guys and trying out a simple, but absolutely classic recipe together: la Tarte Tatin. Cook with me then share it with your own family. Get your aprons and spatulas and let’s do camp in the kitchen!

Mandarin Culture

Min Lu

Pick one day each week for a new lesson:

Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1 p.m. PST

Nihao! I am originally from southwest China and have lived in the US for many years. I love to travel, read, watch movies, and make friends. Teaching in both China and America has given me an opportunity to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds.

As a professional teacher and an eager language learner myself, I look forward to exploring Chinese with you and helping you learn this beautiful language. I will make our lessons fun, engaging, and productive.

Explore The Lessons...

In week 1, let’s take a virtual tour to China, a country with a history of over 5,000 years! From its five major mountains to its two longest rivers, from the Great Wall in Beijing to the hometown of panda bears, you will love the unique landscapes and its rich culture. We will also explore a few major cities and learn to count Chinese currency RMB.
If you wonder what makes Chinese Moon Festival special, you should learn about two related folk stories, “Hou Yi Shooting the Suns” and “Chang E Flying to the Moon”. We will take a look at Chinese lunar calendar (which follows the phases of the moon) and read a popular poem about the moon. Don’t forget that the moon is on its brightest and fullest day; it is also a time for family reunion.
Do you know how many people celebrate Chinese New Year (or Spring Festival) around the world? Over 2 billion! The celebration lasts for 16 days from New Year’s Eve up to the Lantern Festival. Come and learn about its legend, decoration, customs, zodiac animals, and of course, traditional foods. Will you join me and follow a recipe to make Chinese dumplings, too?
